Van Mechelen is an industrial and urban café in the South of Amsterdam. This restaurant is situated on the border of Hoofddorppleinbuurt and Schinkelbuurt, near Het Vondelpark.
We and a couple of friends went to Van Mechelen on a Friday afternoon for drinks and bites. This is the ideal hang out because of the large bar, friendly service and the relaxed atmosphere! Van Mechelen offers a variety of delicious wines and a great selection of beers. For bites you can choose between a charcuterie, a fromagerie, the Dutch ‘bitterballen’ and other fingerfood snacks. Enjoy the vintage and industrial interior design which looks like nobody paid attention to it, but then they did anyway. This newly-opened beer bar reminded us of Belgium!
This restaurant slash cafe is open daily from 9am and therefore serve breakfast and lunch. For dinner you should check out their chalk board for daily specials at reasonable prices!
Stadscafe Van Mechelen reminded me of PLLEK (review online soon), a creative hang out in Amsterdam Noord, but also of places like BOSCO, TUIN 10 and CAFÉ DE WALVIS. Though this hang out has much more authenticity. See more of the restaurants I visit by following me on Instagram!

You did not tell where the name ‘Van Mechelen’ comes from. Looking at the photographs it does not seem to have any connection with the Flemish town Mechelen.
Hi Marcus, thanks for your message. No it doesn’t seem to have any connection with that town (actually I wouldn’t know because I think I’ve never been there ;)). Though it has Belgian influences: the owner of Van Mechelen also has two other Belgian beer bars in this neighbourhood with the names De Zotte and Gent aan de Schinkel. What do you think of these Belgian beer bars in foreign countries, Marcus?

Belgium has so many good beers. Though I do prefer a good glass of wine I also can enjoy several interesting Belgian beers which are often superior to the many International commercial brands. I do find it important that others can come in contact with the vintage beers and the many special variation which can be created by the combination of different grains and different sorts of water. It is lovely others worldwide can enjoy those beautiful tastes and can find out that beer should not be just some salty or bitter water. For the small brewers it is also an opportunity to have their precious work be known worldwide.
