Kitchen & Bar Van Rijn is a wide restaurant with an international looking bar (that reminds me of Tunes Bar) and very good food! The restaurant is named after the Golden Age painter Rembrandt Van Rijn. The only reference to the painter is the name and the paintings on the wall by the famous artist. Oh yeah.. It’s situated on the Rembrandtsquare -one of the bigger squares in Amsterdam- across the street from Café Schiller and Eetsalon Van Dobben. This square is quite touristy but once you’re inside Van Rijn you totally forget this!
They recently renewed their menu so you’re in for a treat! I got to taste the previous menu that consisted of a lot of classics but also some innovative food combinations. They have an extended menu with a lot of classic ingredients on it like oysters, salmon, carpaccio, steak tartare and scallops as starters. Or mains with salmon, wagyu rib eye, lobster or steak.
Our starter was a terrine of salmon with soft crab inside and mustard mayonnaise on the side. This was really tasty (see photo above). As a main we got a risotto made with red beets. Therefore it had this beautiful colour of dark red/pink with a range of brown baked and white mushrooms, red/brown tender meat with a good gravvy made this a little bit of Rembrandt on our plate! The mix of flavours were delicious..
So the name and the paintings on the wall weren’t the only references to this famous painter. Actually I don’t know if the Rembrandt van Rijn also loved a cocktail. Because that’s what I am ordering next time!
