and pings when your food is spoiling. Does this sound like the future to you? A smart tupperware that tells you when you must use the food in your fridge. It’s happening right now! And I want it.
This is the company that’s responsible for the innovative idea of putting smart tags on food/packages. Trendwatching.com: “Chicago-based startup Ovie launched Smarterware on Kickstarter in May ’18 with a range of food storage products that help users avoid food waste. By placing smart tags on food the Ovie Smarterware keeps track of your food so you don’t have to think about it. You get a notification at the right time on your phone so your food don’t gets wasted.”
The smart tags have color-coded green, yellow and red tags which signal if an expiry date is approaching. Smarterware also works with Amazon’s Alexa, enabling users to access expiry information by saying the name of the food (something that may not be available in The Netherlands). A connected mobile app sends alerts to the user’s phone when food is near spoiling, AND includes a recipe search based on ingredients they already have.
Ovie Smarterware has smashed its Kickstarter goal (USD 40,000) in just a week! Expected delivery of the products will be February 2019 though (#sadface).
The technical innovation comes from a basic human need: wanting to waste less foods. Instead of waiting for smart fridges to tell online supermarkets what we need in our fridge and deliver it, we want to use the foods we buy in the supermarket more effectively. The Smarterware helps us with that.
From the perspective of The Internet of Caring Things, the focus on saving our planet (one step at the time) is now on food by being vegan or eating less meat and a more plantbased diet, being aware of all the plastic our foods are wrapped in, etc.
With the Smarterware you are totally in control. It saves you time, money and food: Ovie helps you save time by giving you recipe tips based on the food you have stored in your fridge, you save money by using the food that you still have in the fridge and waste less food. It’s simple, easy to use and has a great look. You’d think I have shares of Ovie right? I just love a good idea!
