Café Modern

Café Modern is situated in the North of Amsterdam and is easily accessible.
For example from the direction of the city centre, you cross the IJ river with the ferry to Buiksloterweg. Here you also see the new EYE Film Museum and their beautiful building! From this point it is a five-minute bike drive (straight on and to your right at the first crossing, it’s on your right hand side). Don’t be surprised: it is situated in the middle of a residential area, in a former bank.

Café Modern isn’t a café as the name presumes. It is a restaurant with a simple but stunning and, as I see it, perfect interior: from the colours & the bike on the wall, the mirror tiles, the vintage vases on the table with just a few delicate flowers in it, the open kitchen, fresh veggies in a display and a lot of light. Since this used to be a bank, go check out the safe downstairs!

So this restaurant really focuses on haute cuisine. My kind of concept! Café Modern offers one menu which consists of five courses for a very decent price: €37,-. The food is so tasteful, well prepared and in the right proportions. First I thought the dishes were too small, but that’s just because I just wanted to eat more of it: it’s so SO delicious!

They serve the dishes quite rapidly after one another. We asked the chef why and this was his answer: “Because the dishes are relatively small we decided to serve it in a more rapid tempo than a fancy restaurant would do this. Therefore, you are content with what you’ve eaten without being hungry or feeling bloated because you had too much”. It was perfect, my compliments to you!
