Vuurtoreneiland is a summer pop-up on an island outside of Amsterdam. Last year I went there and loved it! Would you like to know why? Read it here!A one hour boat ride takes you to a totally different environment. And what an experience that is! Hop on the old ferry and go somewhere you’ve never been, don’t you just love firsts?
The Island
It looks like an abandoned island, but people actually live here (I am so jealous!). At arrival you immediately spot the ancient lighthouse that is so old, it needs a stand to keep standing. An often photographed frame! Soon after the old lighthouse comes the glass house amidst a lot of green nature and blue water where you’ll have dinner.
Dinner & Wine
You are taken care of during the boat ride and when you arrive at the scene. With what you’ll see for yourself ;) The table d’hôte four course dinner is made of local and organic ingredients only. The variety of ingredients is therefore wide and fair combinations are made which could’ve been a bit bolder (only the dessert). I especially liked the main course with veal, pumpkin puree, shallots and palm cabbage. The open kitchen shows the structured work of the chefs really well and the staff is very friendly, talkative and readily to explain the organic wines.
Exploring The Island
During dinner you explore the island. It is really something! And so romantic as well.. But because you walk around a lot, I didn’t really feel satisfied (or maybe we should blame the mini-me in me). Go explore the toilet bunker as well. Also quite an experience, especially when it’s dark.
The Experience
Vuurtoreneiland is €55 per person including a four course table d’hôte dinner and boat ride (excl. drinks). It is quite the experience and I would go another time for sure! Though I do think the food can be a bit better or more exciting to be exact. I’ve seen magical pictures of this place, but nothing beats experiencing it yourself!
Do you want to go to Vuurtoreneiland as well? You can call them daily from 2pm to see if they have extra seats available for that day.

PS. This summer edition extends with a winter edition: They are working on a restaurant inside the bunkers plus about eight cabins where you can spend the night. How cool is that?
