Yes, us Dutchies love it very much: ‘borrelen’. We even made a word for it.. However the English translation for this word is hard to find. But the meaning is something like enjoying drinks and bites while hanging out with friends. Here are some of the 10 Best Places to go for a ‘borrel’!
Of course Boca’s has to be on this list. They are the king of shared platters! Relaxed atmosphere, friendly staff and you will have a lovely cosy evening with friends. You can order a vegetarian, meat, fish, cheese or the Boca’s platter which is a combination of all. And fun to know: They have a platter full of sweets like Oreo truffles and a blond brownie.. Located in the Jordaan and the Pijp.
A laidback place with approx. 200 bottles of wine. They serve a lot of different kinds of sausages (worst means sausage in Dutch), with fennel and lamb for example. And when the sun is shining, Worst has a lovely terrace! This cafe is behind Westerpark.
At the menu of VOLT you’ll find a long list of craft beers! Beers of Oedipus, Brouwerij ‘t IJ, Two Chefs Brewing to name a few. They even have a gluten free pilsener from Mongozo. Their ‘borrel’ menu has all the essentials: nachos with guacamole and salsa,
‘bitterballen’, cheese sticks and platters of charcuterie and cheese. Located in the Pijp.
You can rinse away one of these fantastic and famous flammkuchen with a cocktail (or two), Gin Tonics, wine or with a beer. Taking the ‘borrelen’ part next level! Recently opened the 2nd location at the Fizeaustraat.
‘ T Smalle
This spot is one of our golden oldies! It’s a typical Dutch brown cafe: small, dark, small and full of people when you are there on a Saturday afternoon. Personally we don’t like their wines very much, but they do serve Natte, Zatte, ‘t IJ beer, Texels beer (one of the islands). Sit at the bar or at least downstairs or at their terrace. Upstairs is for tourists ;)
Cafe de Biertuin
Perfect terrace and brownish interior. Perfect chicken which you can order with one of the many beers they offer: Weizen, Double, Triple, Pale Ale, India Pale Ale, Saison, Fruitbeer. I actually have no idea, I don’t drink beer ;) Rosemarijn does!
Stadscafe Van Mechelen
Named after the Belgium city, with extensive cocktail bites, eight Belgian beers on tap and another fifteen bottled beers, all wines are also available by the glass. Plus they always offer a varied assortment of beers from a number of Amsterdam Craft Brewers.
The Seafood Bar
Crazy about seafood? Then you’ll love to have some bites here! They have an extensive menu with finger food which brings this borreltime to the next level: Carpaccio of pulpo, doesn’t that sound like heaven on a plate? They have a new location in the middle of the Pijp!
This spot is perfect for us foodies who love a drink. They serve the best Portuguese finger food! From olives, bread, Mediterranean charcuterie and cheese, nuts, fritos de Lisboa, sardines, gambas you can go from bites to dinner in a second and eat burgers and much more. Check their lunch menu here.
And if you don’t feel like going out to one of the best borrel spots but rather stay home and invite friends.. Then Borrelplateau is the solution! Or take it with you to the park or on the boat. A delicious platter of charcuterie, fromagerie, olives, fresh bread and homemade tapenade. What more do you want?
