Earlier this month, SLA opened their first organic salad bar in the centre of De Pijp in Amsterdam. You cannot have missed it: SLA is the talk of the town! That said, it is even better to taste and experience SLA – STORY154 went for a visit on Tuesday after they’d opened…
A warm welcome from the passionate Nina and a quick chat is my first experience at SLA. Helping the line of people, making salads and juices is part of the job now. Enthusiastically she tells me about the fresh ingredients which come from local farmers. “Though one of the downsides is that you are dependent of their crops”, Nina explains that the egg plant is finished. “It was less than we expected to get”. Nevertheless… there is enough for everyone!
What are Nina’s favourite salads? The salad with Italian mozzarella and the spicy falafel!
The place was packed and still is as I read on Vogue.nl. And the salad bar concept couldn’t miss out on their interior. That’s where Nicemakers Joyce and Dax were in charge: the minimalistic white space with a lot of greens and browns creates a cool and urban atmosphere, like you’re in a salad bar in New York! First you enter a shop kind of area where you can order your salad. The steel designed greenhouse with the big SLA sign on it, is already a trademark for the salad bar. Upstairs you can hang out and sit at the small brown tables where plants are hanging from the wall accompanied with a card explaining what plant it is and how much water it needs (or love ;)).
SLA is a great new culinary hotspot in a vibrant part of Amsterdam. The food tastes great! Although I’d like some more mozzarella in my salad next time. There definitely will be a next time as it is such a cool and relaxed place to have lunch with your friends or take one of the delicious salads to the nearest park.
PS. You also should take a look at the smallest room of SLA, the most touched part of SLA I guess…
Much talked about SLA on Vogue, Elle and NSMBL. Pictures by STORY154 – Michelle van der Vliet.

[…] SLA updated their menu with seasonal veggies and greens! Dishes and ingredients which are here to stay are f.e. the organic chicken (this time roasted instead of grilled), quinoa, certain kinds of lettuce, seeds and beans. A whole new and improved menu with new salads like Vegan Greens with spinach, broccoli, zucchini, avocado and roasted pumpkin seeds. One with marinated goatcheese also sounds delicious with dandelion salad, spelt, eggplant, pumpkin, pecan nuts and olives. Or you can go for sweet and sour gamba’s or spicy falafel. Sounds delicious, right? […]
