10 Best Places To Eat Burgers in Amsterdam

This week’s Tuesday 10 is about the best places to eat burgers (and crispy fries!) in Amsterdam. After a few very succesful editions of where to eat chicken, to eat healthy or to drink gintonics, here is our latest 10 Best list:

Bar Boca’s serves a small burger with foie gras and truffle mayonnaise. It’s placed on a crispy bun, the beef is tender and juicy and the truffle mayonnaise. Yum, we love truffle mayonnaise! Make sure to order two burgers, otherwise you’re finished after 3 bites. It’s definitely one of the best places to eat burgers in Amsterdam!

Burgerzaken is relatively new burger bar at the Oude Hoogstraat in Amsterdam and has an amazing Wagyu beef burger. The exclusive Wagyu beef burger is very flavorful: Its softness, taste and juicyness is truly the best!

The Beef Chief is a definite sell out if his truck is on your food festival. This burger boss makes one of the best burgers in Amsterdam! Their beef is from a local farmer where the cattle was grassfed, the buns are freshly made by an artisan baker. Guaranteed food baby!

The Butcher has big burgers in the front and small ones in the more high end “secret” cocktailbar in the back (pricier as well). STORY154’s tip: start at the front and work your way to the back ;) We especially love the truffle burger!

Bar Mick serves a BIG MICK with cheese and crispy fries (see photo above). Though I don’t like cheese on my burger. This burger is tasty and is really juicy, served with enough veggies and it’s big because of the huge crispy bun.

Burgermeester is one of the first burger bars in Amsterdam. They have a variety of burgers: From lamb to chicken, from Blonde d’aquitaine beef to tuna. You can go for one big tasty fellow or if you can’t choose between all of this yumminess than try three small ones (same or different burgers).

Julius Bar & Grill has a starter of a pulled pork sandwich on a small bun with bloater fish mayonnaise. Delicious! And as a main they serve you tasty and soft black angus beef burger with bacon, onions and cheddar.

Burger Bar is more like a fastfood restaurant but not with your average burger. Expect to be wowed with beef burgers like Irish beef, Black Angus, Wagyu beef. Top it off with your favorite yumminess and sauces and you got yourself your favorite burger!

Burgerlijk Amsterdams is not your average burger bar (though resembles the Burger Bar a bit)! Here you can make your own burger: 1. Pick a burger (beef, chicken or vegetarian), 2. Choose a cheese (Old Amsterdam, roquefort, American cheddar or goatcheese), 4. Pick one or more toppings and last but not least: Do you want fries with that?

Café De Walvis is across the street from Bar Mick and serves you a delicious burger as well. This huge hambo is full of flavor, very tender and you can enjoy it to the fullest when you eat it on their terrace with a glass of wine and fries on the side.

This is our top 10 of the best places to eat burgers in Amsterdam! Do you have your own favorite and it’s not in this list? Comment on this blogpost!

PS. One burger we haven’t tried before (but really want to!) is the burger of The Young Pretenders! We will soon try this one out and let you know what it tasted like..

The Burgers at Boca’s are the best!

My favourite burger in Amsterdam is definitely at de Biertuin. It’s absolutely amazing so if you haven’t been there you should definitely try it out!
And I don’t know if I’m the only one but when I’ve been at Burgermeester I always found their burgers to be quite dry and boring. :P

Michelle posted this on September 23, 2014 at 5:01 pm Reply

Thanks for your comment, Rebecca! We hear different reviews about the burgers of Burgermeester. We always had good burgers there so as a burger pioneer in Amsterdam we wanted to add them to the list.

Luckily we have a lot more burger bars to choose from! ;)

Hey Guillermo, it’s not on our list! *shame* ;) You are a big fan of their burger? Let me know why, I am really curious!

I agree with the Biertuin recommendation! Also just had the burger at Troost in de Pijp and it was excellent!

You should def try the burgers at Geflipt (van woustraat Amsterdam), new place, great burgers!!

Thanks Eva! We did hear about it but didn’t have the chance to go by.. So, great burgers huh? Now I’m really curious! ;)

I became a sort of a Burger expert when I lived in Amsterdam. The overhyped ones all have very average burgers. Examples: Burgermeester, Burger Bar, The Butcher. All very average and nothing to call home about.

The best burger I found (and it’s a secret, don’t tell anyone) was at Café Flinck close to Albert Cuypmarkt. Try it and be amazed. :)

Michelle posted this on September 27, 2014 at 5:40 pm Reply

Thanks, Sindri! I will def give Flinck a try.. I am working on a Burger Part II because of all the suggestions I got! But first the try-out part ;) Very tough job, but somebody has to do it. All for research! :D

As long as you keep referring to American Cheddar as cheese I can not take anything you’re saying seriously. Sorry.

Michelle posted this on September 27, 2014 at 5:38 pm Reply

Sorry that you feel that way: This is how Burgerlijk Amsterdams call the cheddar cheese they use. What’s in a name right?

One of the best burgers I’ve ever had was at the organic snackbar “t Pontstation” at the NDSM werf! Have you tried that one yet??

We know the spot, but haven’t tried their burgers yet. Thanks Lisa, now we’ll def try it out ;)

I totally agree with Sindri (though I have yet to try the Flinkburger). I also think that Thrillburger, the Biertuin burger, Pontstation burger, Walvis Burger, Brouw burger, Kostverloren burger, Geflipt burger, Nacional burger, Huf burger and Dapper burger aren’t as great as they’re hyped up to be (Dapper is a place in West that serves lobster and burgers, among other dishes). Some are better than others but most places think they make a great burger, and they don’t. They’re missing that comfort food touch and most of them don’t have great buns. I also hate it when they serve it in a foccacia, like they do at Burgermeester.
You didn’t mention Smokin’ Barrels in Oost, apparently their burgers are good. I also heard great things about Lonbardo’s, but according to the Yelp page, discerning burger tasters found it “ok” according to their expectations. I can’t wait to try it, though. Also curious about Burgerzaken and Pompstation in Oost. And there is a new spot near Leidseplein that’s open very late called Bar-B Burger. Kinda tacky but the burgers are slightly better than The Butcher, The Burger Bar and Burgermeester. However, the wagyu burger was a total rip-off, it tasted like nothing else than regular ground beef.
I’m looking forward to tasting the sliders at Graceland, a new meat restaurant on the Jan van Galenstraat. There’s also a meat restaurant at de Hallen, apparently it’s pretty good and of better quality than the burgers right next door at Brasserie Halte 3. Which is strange, because they’re the same owners.
The best burger I’ve ever had was at Lust in the 9 straatjes about ten years ago. Another one was at a deli on de Clerqstraat some years ago. Both have since closed down… at the moment, I think the mini burger at Boca’s is definitely one of the best in Amsterdam.
As for J’s comment, the classic burger is made with American cheddar cheese, so not sure what your point is. There are many different brands with varying qualities, as with British cheddar. It’s not all Kraft manufactured plastic. In the USA, where the hamburger originated, people take their burgers very seriously.- even at the local diner I would personally not take a burger seriously if it’s served with blue cheese, mozarella or Gouda.

Ha Nihal, thanks for your long long message on burgers ;) There are a lot of burger places in town – that’s for sure! I’m also very curious how the Graceland burgers taste.. Do you mean The Butcher at De Foodhallen? Or Meat West? Ever tried the burger of Burgelijk Amsterdams? I thought that one was really good! The hunt for the best burger in town is still going on. If you find the best burger in town before I do, let me know ;)

Not sure if I should tell you this, because I actually don’t want to get the place to crowded, but Lombardo’s (the Kimchi burger is my favourite) is awesome, I also love the burgers by the Beef Chief but I don’t like that they’re on festivals most of the time and don’t have a “steady” place to satisfy my burger-cravings…
