All new and fresh is restaurant Meneer Nieges at Westerdoksdijk. You’ve probably heard of it before: Meneer Nieges is situated next to the IJ so a nice view and a fresh breeze is guaranteed. They have a really large terrace with big picknick tables and cosy little tables. At about 5 o’clock the sun creeps behind the big buildings. That’s a pity, however you still have the view over the IJ and that counts for something!
It’s all in the name
Dutch and Amsterdam influences are all over if you look closely. Meneer Nieges is an Amsterdam expression which means ‘bad luck’. This refers to the many restaurants (Nevel for example) that have tried to succeed at this spot, without any success.. So we wish Meneer Nieges all the best!
The menu
The neck of lamb, braised eggplant, yogurt, dukkah and lamb gravy I recommend you. This was divine! For lunch they have all kinds of sandwiches, mostly with Middle Eastern flavours. Though lunch could be a bit bigger if you ask me.
Meneer Nieges is a real asset for Amsterdam: a cool spot to hang out and terrace wise of course. It is also a nice place to have drinks with friends and later on in the evening, you can take your chance and dance away. In the weekend they close at 3 o’ clock at night.
